Textbook Information

This information has been updated for Spring 2010.

Be sure you also see information on DVDs  for your course.

Textbooks for various courses include the following.

Many of these texts are packaged with supplementary materials and access codes, often at no addition cost.  If you are considering obtaining a text from a source other than the VHCC bookstore you should email the instructor to be sure you are getting everything you need.

In most cases previous editions of the texts can be supported.  If you are considering an earlier edition, email the instructor to see if that edition can be supported.

MTH 151-152: Mathematical Ideas, Expanded Edition, latest edition by Miller and Heeren. The bookstore version contains access codes for some useful publisher support.  Most students, however, do not report that they make use of publisher support.

MTH 158: College Algebra by Sullivan, latest edition, packaged by the VHCC bookstore with the associated CD Lecture Series.  The text and the CD Lecture Series can be ordered separately from independent vendors.

Earlier editions of the Mth 158 text might be supported, so if you are using or wish to use an earlier edition of the text contact the instructor to see if that version is supported.

MTH 163: No text is required. The Mth 164 text may be used as a reference if you so desire.

MTH 164: Precalculus by Sullivan, latest edition.

MTH 173-4: Calculus Single Variable, latest edition by Hughes-Hallet etc.  4th or 3d edition can also be supported; email instructor for details.

MTH 271-272: Calculus: An Applied Approach by Larson-Edwards, latest edition.

MTH 277:  See Announcement on Blackboard page for your course.  This is a very standard course and there are at least four alternative texts, all with very similar coverage, all available online at very reasonable cost.  If you wish to purchase a new text at full price through the VHCC bookstore, email the instructor.  If you make this request within the first week of classes, it should be possible to obtain copies by the time you will need them.  However the Strauss, Bradley and Smith text cannot be sold through the bookstore.

Mth 279:  Elementary Differential Equations by Kohler and Johnson.  Either the second or third edition can be supported.  Second edition copies are available online at low cost.  If you wish to purchase a new text at full price through the VHCC bookstore, email the instructor.  If you make this request within the first week of classes, it should be possible to obtain copies by the time you will need them.

PHY 121-122: Physics by Giancoli, latest Edition.

PHY 201-202: Physics by Giancoli, latest Edition.

PHY 231-2: University Physics, Extended Version by Young, Freedman, latest edition. Students taking only the first-semester course can choose the less expensive first volume of the 'split' version of the text, but this volume is not available at the VHCC bookstore.  The second semester course uses information from both parts of the 'split' version, so unless you already have the first part, the second part of the 'split' version will not be sufficient and you should purchase the entire text.

PHY 241-2: University Physics, Extended Version by Young, Freedman, latest edition.
