DIRECTOR OF DISTANCE LEARNING AND DISTRIBUTED LEARNING

This Director is responsible for distance learning and educational technology services, instructional design opportunities, production of educational materials and assessment of these activities. This position reports to the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, and specific responsibilities include:

  1.  Coordinating distance learning and educational technology services, including scheduling compressed video courses through the Virginia Distance Education Network, creating, recycling, and maintaining online courses and enrollments via Blackboard or other course management system, providing course information to Distance Education contact at the Virginia Community College System office, and assisting with assessment of distance and distributed learning, including gathering information from students and faculty and storing data from course evaluations and other sources into a database for planning, assessment, program development and institutional effectiveness.
  2.  Working with the faculty to provide instructional design services and professional growth opportunities in distance learning and educational technology.
  3.  Implementing the VHCC plan to ensure distance education course quality.
  4.  Planning operations for the effective use of educational technology in the teaching/learning process.
  5.  Supervising the testing center operations and staff to ensure a secure and effective testing environment to meet student needs and support the curriculum.
  6.  Evaluating current and emerging educational technologies to improve the teaching/learning processes; maintaining and reporting evaluation results, including monitoring all media and transmission quality through reviewing media samples annually and all media about which significant concerns have been identified.
  7.  Maintaining and or creating appropriate records on distance education and distributed learning enrollment, assessment, student evaluation of instruction, faculty satisfaction surveys on educational technologies, instructional support and training, and response times for services. Reviewing all significant service issues and documenting all actions taken.
  8.  Informing faculty and staff about available technological resources for distance and distributed learning and encouraging incorporation of these resources in courses when appropriate.
  9.  Managing the budget of Distance Learning and Distributed Educational Technology department.
  10.  Coordinating distance learning and educational technology services with day and evening services support staff.
  11.  Ensuring compliance with copyright laws and licensing agreements involving the educational use of materials, software, and technologies.
  12.  Advising and making recommendations to the Vice President of Instruction and Student on matters related to distance and distributed learning and other educational technologies.
  13.  Performing other duties as may be deemed appropriate by the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services.
