Course title and description: Calculus with Analytic Geometry II (5 cr.): Continues the study of analytic geometry and the calculus of algebraic and transcendental functions including rectangular, polar, and parametric graphing, indefinite and definite integals, methods of integration, and power series along with applications. Designed for mathematical, physical, and engineering science programs. Prerequisites: MTH 173 or equivalent. (Credit will not be awarded for more than one of MTH 174, MTH 174, or MTH 274.) Lecture 5 hours per week.
Broad goals: The student will refine the knowledge gained in Calculus I regarding how to use the concepts of the integral, the derivative, the differential and differential equations to relate quantities to rates of change. The student will learn techniques for manipulating integrals, the theory of integration, applications of integration, sequences and series including an introduction to Taylor and Fourier Series, and modeling with separable and second-order linear differential equations.
Specific objectives: Each assigned problem constitutes a specific objective, which is to solve the problem and to use it as a means of synthesizing the student's understanding of the subject.
Instructional Methodologies: Concepts will usually be developed within the context of a concrete model, often with hands-on experience to provide a basis on which to develop a deeper and more general understanding of the concept. Concrete and specific examples will be generalized into graphical and symbolic form. Class will typically be divided between lecture and hands-on problem solving, in more or less equal proportions. Lecture notes will be posted on the Internet, and versions of the lecture notes with hyperlinked video lectures will be available in a CD-R format.
Tests and Exams: Approximately three tests and a final exam will be given during the semester. Tests and exams will be generated from a large problem bank and will be administered through the college Learning Lab.
Grading policy: Homework and participation will count as 20% of the final grade. Tests will comprise 50% of the final grade and the final exam will comprise 30%; however if it is to the student's advantage tests and the final exam of each count as 40% of the final grade.
