Set 3 Problem 13

** **

** **

I was reviewing for my test and I was working the problem sets. I got a little confused when I got to Set 3 Number 18 because you have: The work done by the mass against the elastic restoring force is therefore Fave * `ds = 186.05 Newtons * 3.9 meters = 290.237 Joules.

This work is the increase in the elastic PE of the system. When I did the math it doesn't equal 290.237 with your numbers. But, if you use 1.56 m which is the length it was stretched past its equilibrium length then the value of 290.237 would be correct. I need some clarification on what I'm doing wrong?

The arithmetic in the Introductory Problem Sets isn't always correct. Sometimes the random number generator gets ahold of the wrong numbers.

However you would calculate the work in the indicated manner, by multiplying average restoring force by displacement.

As far as I know, only the arithmetic is occasionally in error. The method of solution is, as far as I know, correct in all of these problems.
