Assignments

Distance Students:  For each assignment see the corresponding video lectures on your Chapter CD, as indicated by the section number on the link.  Note that you should have completed the Orientation as indicated in the early emails you received from the instructor.  Be sure to check your VCCS email account regularly.

Note:  Since you will be using it repeatedly, you might wish to download the file query_ac2_070113.exe, which is the query program for this course.  The file can be run from your Internet browser but unless you have a fast connection there will be a delay as they load.

This program creates SEND files like the ones you have submitted for the Orientation.  The SEND file contains in its filename the current date (e.g., 0214 for February 14).

Assignments 0-5:  Communication, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

Assignment 0

Within this program, Assignments 11-12 give you the rules of differentiation; assignments 13-15 include applications of integration, tangent lines and the differential; assignment 16 addresses implicit differentiation.  Assignments 1-10 introduce you in a unified way to the concepts of differentiation and integration, beginning with the concept of rate of change.  Assignment 10 is fairly challenging and introduces the central ideas of integration in the context of finding present and future values of an investment.

Most second-semester calculus students need this refresher on standard first-semester calculus topics.

Assignment 1

As you work through Chapter 4 view the file Chapter_4.htm from the Chapter 4 CD.  The topics are in the same sequence as the text.

Text Section 4.1-4.2

Assignment 2

Text Section 4.4

Assignment 3

Text Section 4.5

Assignment 4

Text Section 4.6

Assignments 5-13:  Integration part I

Assignment 5

View the Introduction to Integration CD (it runs about an hour) and return to it as needed as you work through the first few sections of Chapter 5.

Complete Test on Chapter 4 in Learning Lab or Approved Testing Facility, according to Testing Instructions on the Supervised Study Current Semester pages.

Text Section 5.1, Part 1

With Assignments 5 and 6, View Class Notes #01, which gives an overview of integration and assumes you have viewed the Introduction to Integration clips (ignore section numbers, which are for Chapter 6 of a different text)

Assignment 6

Text Section 5.1, Part 2; Section 5.2 Part 1

Recommended assignments:  Consider submitting all or part of the document qa_ac2_14.htm, which is intended as an introduction to integration by substitution.  If you don't have any trouble with Section 5.2, this might not be necessary for you.

Assignment 7

Section 5.2, Part 2; Section 5.3

See note about qa_ac2_14.htm in Assignment 6.

View Class Notes #02; Concentrate on the part about finding antiderivatives analytically.  The part about graphing antiderivatives should be viewed for the insights it offers about the geometry of functions and their derivatives.

Assignment 8

Section 5.4

View Class Notes #03 on Integrals and Differential Equations

Assignment 9

Section 5.5, Part 1

View Class Notes #05, concentrating on Differential Equations for Free Fall; 2d Fundamental Theorem is optional.
