SEED Question 17.1
A steel ball rolls down a ramp and collides with a marble, as in the video. The marble is slightly smaller and quite a bit less massive than the ball.
• If they both experience the same force, which will have the greater acceleration?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :
Given:
M = steel ball
A = for steel ball
m = smaller ball
a = for smaller ball
F = m * a = M * A, the smaller ball will have the greater acceleration.
@& Good, but this conclusion can be reached without formulas.
Forces are the same. Since a = F / m, the lesser mass experiences the greater acceleration.
The forces would in fact be equal and opposite, but when stating this problem I chose not to add the distraction of signs.

• If the forces were exerted during identical time intervals, which would have the greater change in velocity?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :
F = dp / dt
dp = F / dt = m * change in velocity = M * change in velocity
The smaller ball will also have the greater change in velocity.
