Orientation Part 3

course Mth 151

I hope I am doing this correctly. I seem to be a bit confused on order of operations however, since it has been 2 years since I have taken a math course.

`q001. Explain the difference between x - 2 / x + 4 and (x - 2) / (x + 4). The evaluate each expression for x = 2.

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

The difference between the two problems is one of them uses parenthesis, which indicate that this part of the problem is to be completed separately and 'groups' the order you need to complete the operations in. The answer to the first problem is 5, because you should divide the 2 and the x, since they are not grouped 'off' by parenthesis. The solution to the second problem is 0/6 or undefined due to the way the problem is grouped.

`q002. Explain the difference between 2 ^ x + 4 and 2 ^ (x + 4). Then evaluate each expression for x = 2.

Note that a ^ b means to raise a to the b power. This process is called exponentiation, and the ^ symbol is used on most calculators, and in most computer algebra systems, to represent exponentiation.

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

The difference in these problems is the first answer is 8, since the order of operations states that you must finish exponentiation first therefore making 2^x the first operation you complete. The second answer is 64, since you complete what is in parenthesis first, then use exponentiation to reach 2^6, which equals 64.

`q003. What is the numerator of the fraction in the expression x - 3 / [ (2x-5)^2 * 3x + 1 ] - 2 + 7x? What is the denominator? What do you get when you evaluate the expression for x = 2?

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

The numerator is -1, while the denominator is 19. The numerator is the top part of a fraction, while the denominator is the bottom part. I arrived at this answer of -1/19 by working out the order of operations.

`q004. Explain, step by step, how you evaluate the expression (x - 5) ^ 2x-1 + 3 / x-2 for x = 4.

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

Starting at the beginning, use 4-5 for what is grouped, and then take that answer and exponentiate it to the second power, which is 1. Multiply the 1 by 4 to obtain 5, and then add 5 with 3/4 and then subtract 2 from the answer there.

*&*& Standard mathematics notation is easier to see. On the other hand it's very important to understand order of operations, and students do get used to this way of doing it.

You should of course write everything out in standard notation when you work it on paper.

It is likely that you will at some point use a computer algebra system, and when you do you will have to enter expressions through a typewriter, so it is well worth the trouble to get used to this notation.

Indicate your understanding of the necessity to understand this notation.

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

It is necessary to understand this notation because understanding it is necessary in completing the order of operations successfully.

while students in other courses should understand the notation and should understand the more basic simplifications.

There is also a link to a page with pictures only, to provide the opportunity to translated standard notation into typewriter notation.

You appear to have a pretty good understanding of the order of operations. Your explanation on the fourth question was mostly correct, and your answer on the third indicates that you missed only one step there. However you should be comparing with given solutions, which do not appear to be present.

&#You should run through this exercise again and include the given solutions and self-critiques. If the program is used according to instructions, it will display the question, your answer, a given solution and your self-critique of the given solution. &#

&#To run the program correctly you click on the Next Question/Solution button (top left), enter your response in the Answer box (the box at top right), click on the Enter Response button (above the top right box), then again on the Next Question/Solution botton (top left) to see the solution, and finally enter your response or self-critique in the Answer box and click on Enter Response.

You then start the process over with the next question, clicking on the Next Question/Solution button at top left, etc.
