Masses of 5 kg and 6 kg are suspended from opposite sides of a light frictionless pulley and are released.
• What will be the net force on the 2-mass system and what will be the magnitude and direction of its acceleration?
First off on my pulley system the 5 kg object is on the left while the 6 kg object is on the right. I calculate their forces separately.
F1 = ma
F1 = 5kg * 9.8m/sec^2
F1 = 49N
F2= ma
F2 = 6kg * 9.8m/sec^2
F2 = 58.8N
Fnet = F2-F1
Fnet = 58.8N – 49N
Fnet = 9.8N
Now I need to find the acceleration of this object. Its mass is the total mass of the system.
Fnet = m*a
9.8N = 11kg * a
A = 0.89m/sec^2. This acceleration is downward with the 6kg object,
answer/question/discussion:
• If you give the system a push so that at the instant of release the 5 kg object is descending at 1.8 meters / second, what will be the speed and direction of motion of the 5 kg mass 1 second later?
The acceleration is moving against the 5kg object. The acceleration is -0.89 m/sec^2. After 1 second the object will decrease from 1.8m/sec to (1.8 – 0.89) 0.91m/sec. It will still be moving downward but not for much longer.
answer/question/discussion:
• During the first second, are the velocity and acceleration of the system in the same direction or in opposite directions, and does the system slow down or speed up?
During the push of the 5kg mass, the velocity is downward, but because there is more weight on the other side, the acceleration is in the opposite direction of the velocity. The mass will decelerate until the velocity reaches 0, and will then move in the opposite direction in favor of the 6kg object.
