A ball is tossed vertically upward and caught at the position from which it was released.

• Ignoring air resistance will the ball at the instant it reaches its original position be traveling faster, slower, or at the same speed as it was when released?

The ball will impact the original position at the same speed(not velocity because it will travel in a different direction) as when it was first released. This is because the total mechanical energy(Potential and Kinetic) are conserved(we are neglecting air resistance).

answer/question/discussion:

• What, if anything, is different in your answer if air resistance is present? Give your best explanation.

If air resistance is present, then there would be nonconservative forces. This would mean that a lot of energy would be lost from the air resistance. When the ball reaches the original position it will not have the same speed as when it was released.
