If the velocity of the object changes from 4 cm / sec to 16 cm / sec in 8 seconds, then at what average rate is the velocity changing?* The average rate the velocity is changing, or the acceleration is : 12cm/s divided by 8s = 1.5cm/s^2.

A ball rolling from rest down a constant incline requires 8.2 seconds to roll the 97 centimeter length of the incline.

• What is its average velocity?

* The average velocity is 97 cm/8.2s = 11.83 cm/s=Vave

An object which accelerates uniformly from rest will attain a final velocity which is double its average velocity.

• What therefore is the final velocity of this ball?

* The final velocity is 2(Vave)=2(11.83cm/s)=23.66 cm/s

• What average rate is the velocity of the ball therefore changing?

* The average rate the velocity is changing, or the acceleration is: the final velocity 23.66cm/s divided by the time interval 8.2 seconds = 2.89 cm/s^2.

An automobile accelerates uniformly down a constant incline, starting from rest. It requires 10 seconds to cover a distance of 132 meters. At what average rate is the velocity of the automobile therefore changing?

* First the average velocity must be found: 132 m/10s = 13.2 m/s. This is then doubled to find the final velocity to be 26.4 m/s. The final velocity is then divided by the time interval of 10s and the average acceleration is found to be 2.64 m/s/s.

Don't think in terms of dividing final vel by time interval; think in terms of dividing change in vel by time interval.

Good work. see my note and let me know if you have questions.
