`q001. Explain the difference between x - 2 / x + 4 and (x - 2) / (x + 4). The evaluate each expression for x = 2.

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

The difference between the two expressions is what portion of the expression is the divisor and dividend. The parentheses determine this in the second expression. In the first expression, one might expect to work left to right, but that would not be correct. The order of operations specify that multiplication and division be done before addition or subtraction. The first expression would evaluate to 2 - 2/2 + 4, leading to 2-1+4 or 5. The second would be quite different. Substituting 2 for x would give (2-2)/(2+4), leading to 0/6 because the expressions in parentheses must be evaluated first in order to perform the division operation. The second expression evaluates to 0.
