The problem:

A ball is moving at 10 cm/s when clock time is 4 seconds, and at 40 cm/s when clock time is 9 seconds.

• Sketch a v vs. t graph and represent these two events by the points (4 sec, 10 cm/s) and (9 s, 40 cm/s).

answer/question/discussion:

• Sketch a straight line segment between these points.

answer/question/discussion:

• What are the rise, run and slope of this segment?

answer/question/discussion: The rise is 30cm, the run is 6s and the slope is 30cm/6s=5cm/s

Your units for either the rise or the run, or perhaps for both, are incorrect. The units of your answer are therefore incorrect.

What are the units of the rise?

What are the units of the run?

What therefore are the units of the slope?

• What is the area of the graph beneath this segment?

answer/question/discussion: A=slope=30cm/6s=5cm/s

The trapezoid that represents this region has two altitudes. What are they? Include units.

What is the width of the trapezoid? Include units.

How do we find the area of a graph trapezoid?

What is the area of this trapezoid, including units in all quantities and in the final result?

What does this area represent?

Is this the appropriate way of calculating the area i looked at the class notes and I am having troble with this part of the problem.

Good job on the slope, except for the units.

I’ve inserted notes related to the slope and to the area.
