HERE IS THE LAB AS IT STANDS SO FAR
(SCROLL TO BOTTOM FOR PROPOSED INSTRUCTIONS TO ANALYST)
Required Materials:
1-liter soda bottle (Professor Smith will be sending this)
Three short tubes of equal length
Three tube caps
Ruler - NOT paper
Set up:
A one liter soda bottle with holes punched at 3cm, 6cm and 12cm from the bottom. (these heights can be adjusted based on the particular shape of the bottle, but the second should be twice as high as the first, and the third should be twice as high as the third). Tubes of equal length should be inserted in each hole and the tubes should be capped.
Distance:
Fill the bottle with water and cap it. Lay a ruler inside a basin or sink where you will catch the water and determine how far the end of the ruler is from the end of the lowest tube.
I used a metal 1-meter ruler for this lab and placed the bottle at the end of the stick for each trial. Each measurement in this document was taken with the bottle in this position. The 2 liter bottle I received had the tubes already inserted at heights of 3cm, 6cm, and 12cm from the lowest point on the bottle before the base stops being cylindrical.
Unplug the lowest tube
Uncap the bottle quickly and watch for the furthest distance the water lands from the bottle. Do this a few times without recording to get a feel for it, being sure to replace lost water after each time.
Once confident, record five trials of the furthest distance
17.8cm
18cm
18.1cm
17.8cm
18.2cm
Repeat this process with only the 6cm tube open
16.6cm
16.5cm
16.9cm
16.6cm
16.7cm
Repeat this process with only the 12 cm tube open
12.8cm
12.8cm
13cm
12.6cm
13.1cm
Finally repeat the process with all tubes open and record the furthest distance of the water coming out of the bottom tube (which should be the furthest of all the tubes)
16.8cm
17cm
16.8cm
16.6cm
16.5cm
REMEMBER to record the distance of the ruler from the bottle.
Time:
Fill and cap the bottle
Unplug the lowest tube
Ready the TIMER program
Open the cap and start the timer. Stop timer when the water reaches a level 1 cm above the top of the lowest tube.
Record three trials with this set up. Copy TIMER results into document
1:56:13
1:51:83
1:53:64
Repeat process with first and second tubes unplugged, recording three trials
1:35:32
1:33:18
1:35:57
Repeat process with all tubes open, recording three trials
1:23:84
1:25:11
1:25:92
REMEMBER to copy TIMER results into document
INSTRUCTIONS TO ANALYST
