Phy 202 Test 4

Monday, July 30, 2012

Same location as others (Tidewater Community College: Portsmouth campus: Testing Center)

Same method as before (fax / regular mail / other: inter-[office/campus] mail; not sure which)

I had problems on this test similar to those I had on Test 2, although I have a better explanation this time (see below re: problem set URLs). Would it be possible for me to retake this test at the same appointment when I retake test 2 (Thursday at 10:30 AM; I'll have more time because it's earlier in the day)? I realize the likelihood that this would be an unusual favor, and if you don't have time to grade two extra tests or if you feel that you have to draw the line at one mulligan, I can certainly understand.
I tried to prepare by doing Introductory Problem Set 7's problems, but only the links for problems 1, 4(?), 13, 18, 20, and 24 worked. (You'll notice that I did well, or at least better, on the concepts tested in these problems...) See below for a] a diagnosis of the problem with the links, albeit not of the cause of that problem, and b] a solution to that problem. Also, because this section didn't have Queries, I didn't have that kind of problem as an alternative way to check my mastery (or lack thereof) of the concepts at issue.
- I suppose that I could have just gone to the back of the textbook chapter and picked out problems from there, so I suppose I wasn't entirely without a remedy, but workarounds like that are harder to think of when one is in the thick of things.
When trying to figure out how I could have done better (think failure mode analysis/postmortem), I noticed the pattern that the only working links are those whose next-to-last letter in the URL's pre-extension filename is A (lower-case in the file name). I then changed that letter in the other links to A and found that the altered links work.
For example: Set 7, Problem 8's link to URL http://vhmthphy.vhcc.edu/ph2introsets/set_7%5Czpb08d8.htm does not work, but manually changing that URL to http://vhmthphy.vhcc.edu/ph2introsets/set_7%5Czpb08a8.htm makes the link work.
Also, I found that changing the last number in the URL's pre-extension filename to a different number in range 1 through 9 appears not to affect the validity of the URL or the content of the linked file. For example, http://vhmthphy.vhcc.edu/ph2introsets/set_7%5Czpb08a1.htm has the same content as http://vhmthphy.vhcc.edu/ph2introsets/set_7%5Czpb08a[2 through 9].htm.
If you are willing to let me retake Test 4 as well, I believe that I'll be much better prepared for the retake now that I've found my way to the problems.

You are welcome to take both tests again.
You'll get credit as well for figuring out the fix. The program persists in generating a, b, c and d versions. I've fixed it a number of times and it works for awhile; then I look away and it reverts. The program is also supposed to provide a working set of links with just the a versions.

I've received your tests. Haven't yet been able to grade them but will soon.
