This is in regards to the Test #2 and final for Phy 241. You had asked that I submit question form regarding this material. I have been spending a lot of time studying the material posted in the section for the review through blackboard, so if you end up being to busy to get around to it I should be OK. Hope you enjoyed your holidays. I will have the Phy 241 Final in the learning lab for you tomorrow or the next day. Thanks again.

@& By how much would the pressure of the gas change due to a 1 degree change in temperature?

By how much would the height of the vertical column therefore change, assuming an insignificant percent change in the volume of the gas?

If there was no pressure change, then by how much would the gas volume have to change? By how much would the volume of water in the tube therefore have to change? How far would the water column have to move to accomplish this change?

Having answered the above correctly, you will be in a position to answer the last question:

At what slope would the water column move half that far?*@

Continue to assume a temperature near 300 K and a volume near 3 liters:

* If the tube was in the completely vertical position, by how much would the position of the meniscus change as a result of a 1 degree temperature increase?

* What would be the change if the tube at the position of the meniscus was perfectly horizontal? You may use the fact that the inside volume of a 10 cm length tube is .7 cm^3.

* A what slope do you think the change in the position of the meniscus would be half as much as your last result?

Report your three numerical answers, one to a line. Then starting on the fourth line, explain how you obtained your results. Also indicate what this illustrates about the importance in the last part of the experiment of having the tube in a truly horizontal position.

3cm 8cm m(slope)= 2

Since 8cm is approximately (for slope purposes) twice as large as 3cm, it is safe to estimate that a slope of 2 would come close to achieving half as much as 8cm.
