Question: `q003. If you are earning 8 dollars / hour, how long will it take you to earn $72? The answer may well be obvious, but explain as best you can how you reasoned out your result.YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution: (type in your solution starting in the next line)

If you are earning 8 dollars every hour and get a total of $72, you divide the total wage earned by the amount paid per hour. $72/ 8 dollars/ hour= 9 hours.

Question: `q004. Calculate (8 + 3) * 5 and 8 + 3 * 5, indicating the order of your steps. Explain, as best you can, the reasons for the difference in your results.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution: (type in your solution starting in the next line)

In the problem (8+3) *5 =55 whereas 8+3*5= 23. The reasoning for this is because you must first take care of the exponents and then move your way to multiplication and division with addition and subtraction following. The second problem gets 3*5 before 8+3 because you multiply before adding in sequence.

Self Critique-I often forget the order and placement of how to ""FOIL"" the equations especially when it comes to exponents and parenthasis. As long as I have the order of operations in the correct order, than I normally do not have trouble with these problems. ####

Question: `q005. Calculate (2^4) * 3 and 2^(4 * 3), indicating the order of your steps. Explain, as best you can, the reasons for the difference in your results. Note that the symbol '^' indicates raising to a power. For example, 4^3 means 4 raised to the third power, which is the same as 4 * 4 * 4 = 64.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution:

First you would calculate the 2 raised to the 4th power which equals 16 which is then multiplied by 3 to give a total of 48. In the problem 2^(4*3) you must first multiply 4 by 3 to give you 12 which is then used as an exponent of the 2 outside the parentheses. therefore 2^12 would then equals 4096.

Question: `q006. Calculate 3 * 5 - 4 * 3 ^ 2 and 3 * 5 - (4 * 3)^2 according to the standard order of operations, indicating the order of your steps. Explain, as best you can, the reasons for the difference in your results.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution:

You must first begin with any exponents within the problem, 3^2 which would be 3*3=9.The equation then becomes 3*5-4*9. 3*5=15 and 4*9=36, so 15-36= -21 for the answer.

For the next problem you must begin with parenthesis, and then use the exponents, with multiplication and division following and addition and subtraction following that. 3*5-(4*3)^2. 3*5*(12)^2. 3*5-144. 15-144= -129

Question: `q007. Let y = 2 x + 3. (Note: Liberal Arts Mathematics students are encouraged to do this problem, but are not required to do it).

•Evaluate y for x = -2. What is your result? In your solution explain the steps you took to get this result.

•Evaluate y for x values -1, 0, 1 and 2. Write out a copy of the table below. In your solution give the y values you obtained in your table.

•Sketch a graph of y vs. x on a set of coordinate axes resembling the one shown below. You may of course adjust the scale of the x or the y axis to best depict the shape of your graph.

•In your solution, describe your graph in words, and indicate which of the graphs depicted previously your graph most resembles. Explain why you chose the graph you did.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution: Since we have the X coordinates all we lack are the Y coordinates, which can be found by plugging in X coordinate into the solution Y=2X+3.

X = -2, y = (-2) + 3 = -4 + 3 = -1.

X = -1, y = (-1) + 3 = -2 + 3 = 1.

X = 0, y = (0) + 3 = 0 + 3 = 3.

X = 1, y = (1) + 3 = 2 + 3 = 5.

X = 2, y = (2) + 3 = 4 + 3 = 7.

Once the Y coordinates have been found then all that needs to be done is to plug in the numbers and the graph depicts a stright line or a linear form line graph.

•In your solution, describe your graph in words, and indicate which of the graphs depicted previously your graph most resembles. Explain why you chose the graph you did.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution: For this problem you must use the function they have given to solve Y for all of the X's they have given. Simply just place the X in place and solve the problem in order to get a Y for each X.

Evaluating y = x^2 + 3 at the five points:

y = x^2 + 3

x = -2 Y= (-2)^2 + 3 = 4 + 3 = 7.

x = -1 Y= (-1)^2 + 3 = 1 + 3 = 4.

x = 0 Y= (0)^2 + 3 = 0 + 3 = 3.

x = 1 Y= (1)^2 + 3 = 1 + 3 = 4.

x = 2 Y= (2)^2 + 3 = 4 + 3 = 7.

The graph makes a U shaped line which would be a quadratic or parabolic line.

•In your solution, describe your graph in words, and indicate which of the graphs depicted previously your graph most resembles. Explain why you chose the graph you did.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution:

This problem will be solved just like the others, but to be sure to use exponents before adding.

Y = 2 ^ x + 3

X = 1, Y = 2^1 + 3 = 2 + 3 = 5.

X = 2, Y = 2^2 + 3 = 4 + 3 = 7.

X = 3, Y = 2^3 + 3 = 8 + 3 = 11.

X = 4, Y = 2^4 + 3 = 16 + 3 = 19

This graph is different from the other two primarily because the Y coordinates increase by their double starting at 2 and then working its way to 8. This graph shows a steep slope to only gets steeper the further up you go. This graph is an exponential graph according to the slope and the rise and direction of the line.

Question: `q010. If you divide a certain positive number by 1, is the result greater than the original number, less than the original number or equal to the original number, or does the answer to this question depend on the original number?

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution:

If a positive number is divided by 1 the answer will always come out to be the original number because 1 does not affect the orginal number and cannot be changed.

Question: `q011. If you divide a certain positive number by a number greater than 1, is the result greater than the original number, less than the original number or equal to the original number, or does the answer to this question depend on the original number?

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution:

If you take a number and divide that by one that is greater than 1, the answer would have to be smaller than the original amount simply because you cannot divide a number by more than 1 and end up with the same orginal number, therefore the number would have to decrease. For instance, 12/2=6; 12/3=4; 12/4=3. The product decreases everytime the divisor increases. As long as a number more than 1 is being divided into a positive number the answer will be smaller than the orginal number.

Question: `q012. If you divide a certain positive number by a positive number less than 1, is the result greater than the original number, less than the original number or equal to the original number, or does the answer to this question depend on the original number?

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution:

This problem being very similar to the previous 2, all three problems work hand in hand. If you have a positive number and were to divide it by number smaller than itself, the answer would have to be more than the orginial number. If you are dividing a positive number by a smaller number than you will get a larger number. If a positive number is divided by 1 it is the same, therefore if you divide by a smaller number, the total will be a larger number.
