• During the half-second before the pilot has time to react to the gust, does the airplane speed up, slow down or maintain constant (or very nearly-constant) speed?

If the wind gust is directed in the opposite direction than which the plane is going then the plane is going to slow down, because of the addition of air resistance of the wind gust.
