course Phy 201
I previously submitted the lab for ruler distortion, but obviously did not understand it, and because of this have wasted an entire day trying to figure out how to do the measurements for the rubber band lab. I'm already far behind and keep getting farther behind because I have so much trouble with the labs that they take me far to long to complete. (The regular exercises apparently take me much longer to do than most as well since the one you noted as taking no longer than 30 min took me over an hour to do). How do you think I should go about handling this (specifically my problems with labs)? Also, someone else's lab on deterioration of difference quotients must have been posted on my access page because I haven't nearly gotten that far yet.
The erroneous posting came about because a student submitted it without an access code; I took my best guess as to the source and apparently didn't guess correctly. Thanks for pointing it out.
The distortion of the paper ruler lab is not necessary for calibrating rubber bands; though it might have some relevance to error estimates, it won't have a great deal of effect.
Some people do work more quickly than others, depending on background, approach and learning style, and as with any lab course the procedures can be pretty time-consuming.
This is particularly so early in a course at this level, when most students have to make a bit of a jump from their previous course work. A student who does well early in the course (as you are doing) typically builds the foundation needed to speed up later in the course.
In the 10-week summer term, you are compressing a rigorous 16-week course into 10 weeks, and not everyone is capable of doing that. My policy is to give students who complete at least half the course by the end of the term extra time to finish, by assigning a grade of I (Incomplete). This gives students until early December to finish their work, though I recommend for the sake of continuity in the learning process that the work be completed earlier than that date.
For your specific situation, when you submit assignments give me an idea of how much time you spent on them, and if certain parts took much longer than others, give me a breakdown of how much time was spend on what. I can try to help you address the time issue on an assignment-by-assignment basis.
