Question: `qquery predictions

Sketch your graph representing the predicted height of the low end vs. the weight on the spring.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution:

Before I completed the experiment I predicted that with more weight the spring would stretch out and loose its spiral shape and get closer to being straight. This, in turn, will make the data values resemble a diagonal line.

I completed the experiment using weights instead of water. The x values, or the weights I added, were as follows with the resulting height represented by the y values:

(0,5.5)

(1,6)

(2,7)

(3,8)

(4,9.5)

(5,10.75)

(7,13)

(9,15.25)

The graph could either be a line with the equation y=1.131x+4.992 or a parabola with the equation y=.017x^2+.971x+5.198.

Given Solution:

STUDENT RESPONSE:

I predict that the spring will stretch at a greater rate as the weight is added. In my experience, springs lose their strength as they are stretched, and will not go back to their original shape.

INSTRUCTOR COMMENT:

** Within their range of elasticity the graph is very nearly linear.

If stretched too far the spring will lose its permanent elastic properties and will then deviate from linearity **

Question: `qcomment on how the actual graph of the data compared with your prediction

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution:

My actual graph data followed my prediction accurately. However, I did not predict that the graph could also resemble a parabola.

Given Solution:

** If you predicted a linear graph then did the actual graph confirm this? If you predicted a curvature did the actual graph confirm this? **

Question: `qquery linked outline

discuss your experience with the Linked Outline. Did you find it helpful?

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Your solution:

I found the linked outline more confusing than helpful. I did, however, print it out to use as further reference.
