Seed quest 24.1

If an airplane is flying north, from what direction would the wind be blowing to most effectively cause the aircraft to veer toward the east?

What sort of path would it follow for the first second or so?

answer/question/discussion:

I think the wind would be blowing from the north west. If it was blowing directly from the west I think it would just blow it off course so that it would remain facing in a northerly direction but would be pushed to a northeast course. However if the wind was blowing from a north west direction it would manage to pivot the plane by catching it’s nose and pushing it easterly.

If the wind keeps shifting so as to remain perpendicular to the direction of motion what path will the airplane follow?

answer/question/discussion:

If the wind started blowing from the west and then moved to remain perpendicular, I think the plane would travel in a clockwise circular path. If it started blowing from the east it would travel in a counterclockwise circular path.

I hope you enjoy your cross country trip. You are fortunate to not suffer from motion sickness. I was miserable on our plane ride home from Europe this summer (9 hours!).The stewardess suggested it might actually have been altitude sickness, but then the bus and the train during the trip weren't very pleasant either.

Great answers.

When I'm driving with passengers on local mountain roads, I've seen them get queasy and on occasion I've had to stop. So I'm sympathetic and consider myself fortunate to have limited sucseptibility.
