A steel ball of mass 60 grams, moving at 80 cm / sec, collides with a stationary marble of mass 20 grams. As a result of the collision the steel ball slows to 50 cm / sec and the marble speeds up to 70 cm / sec.
Is the total momentum of the system after collision the same as the total momentum before?
answer/question/discussion:
M1 = 60g = .06kg
V01 = 80 cm/s = .8m/s
Vf1 = 50cm/s = .5m/s
M2 = 20g = .02kg
V02 = 0m/s
Vf2 = 70cm/s = .7m/s
(m1*v01) + (m2 * v02) = (m1 * vf1) + (m2 * vf2)
(.06kg * .8m/s) + (.02kg * 0) = (.06kg * .5m/s) + (.02kg * .7m/s)
.048 + 0 = .03 + .014
.048 does not equal .044
No, the total momentum after the collision is not the same as before the collision.
What would the marble velocity have to be in order to exactly conserve momentum?
answer/question/discussion:
.048 = .03 + (.02 * x)
.018 = .02 * v
0.9 = v
The marble would have to have a velocity of .9m/s or 90 cm/s
