The problem:

A ball starts with velocity 4 cm/sec and ends with a velocity of 10 cm/sec.

• What is your best guess about the ball's average velocity?

answer/question/discussion:

Answer: I am guessing that the average velocity of the ball is 7 cm/sec because it is halfway between 4 and 10.

• Without further information, why is this just a guess?

answer/question/discussion:

Answer: This is just a guess because we have no idea how long the ball traveled at 4 cm/sec or 10 cm/sec. For example, it could have traveled 4 cm/sec for the majority of the trial in which case the average velocity would be lower than 7 cm/sec.

• If it takes 3 seconds to get from the first velocity to the second, then what is your best guess about how far it traveled during that time?

answer/question/discussion:

Answer: I am guessing it traveled 21 cm because average velocity might have been 7 cm/sec, and it traveled for 3 sec, 7 cm/sec * 3 sec = 21 cm.

• At what average rate did its velocity change with respect to clock time during this interval?

answer/question/discussion:

Answer: 10 – 4 = 6 cm/sec, so the average rate of velocity changed with respect to clock time is: 6/3 = 2 cm/sec.
