course Phy 231

ProblemDo the following:

?Make up a problem for situation # 3, and solve it using direct reasoning.

Answer: Problem 3 has the variables: v0, vf, and ds. If we have v0=0m/s, vf=10m/s, and ds=100m, what is vAve, acceleration and time elapsed. vAve = (0m/s+10m/s)/2 = 5m/s, dt = ds/vAve = 100m/5m/s=20s, ave acc= 10m/s / 20s = .5m/s/s.

?Accompany your solution with an explanation of the meaning of each step and with a flow diagram.

Answer: v0 vf ds

vAve

dt

ave acc

We use v0and vf to solve for vAve, vAve and ds to find dt, and vAve and dt to find ave acc. In a normal flow diagram there are lines showing this but I have no idea how to draw lines in Microsoft word.

?Then solve the same problem using the equations of uniformly accelerated motion.

vf^2 = v0^2 +2ads, 2ads = vf^2 ?v0^2, a = (vf^2-v0^2)/(2ds) = (100m^2/s^2)/(200m) = .5m/s/s.

?Make up a problem for situation # 8, and solve it using the equations of uniformly accelerated motion.

Answer: Problem 8 has the variables: vf, a, and ds. If vf = 5m/s, a = 1m/s/s, and ds=10m, find v0. vf^2 = v0^2 +2ads, v0^2 = vf^2 ?2ads = 25m^2/s^2 ?20m^2/s^2 = 5m^2/s^2, v0 = 2.2m/s.
