Explain in your own words how the standard deviation of a set of numbers is calculuated.

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

First you square the deviations, then find the sum of the squares, then you find the mean of the sum of the squares by dividing by they number of values that were added unless there are less than 30 values. In that case you divide by n - 1 to the 'mean' of squares. The final step is the take the square root of the 'mean' that was found in the previous step.

Explain in your own words the process of fitting a straight line to a graph of y vs. x data, and briefly discuss the nature of the uncertainties encountered in the process. For example, you might address the question of how two different people, given the same graph, might obtain different results for the slope and the vertical intercept.

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

When visually attempting to fit a straight line to a scatter plot graph you simply attempt to find a line that minimizes the distance between the line and all the available points. The same method is performed when calculated by a program with the difference that the distances are not judged visually, but calculated mathematically to be correct.

Briefly state what you think velocity is and how you think it is an example of a rate.

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

Velocity is a vector value that is considered as the rate at which an object moves through space and time. It is typically measured by meters traveled per second.

Given average speed and time interval how do you find distance moved?

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

You multiply the average speed by the time traveled, which cancles out the unit of time, and gives you the distance traveled.

Given average speed and distance moved how do you find the corresponding time interval?

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

By taking the average speed and dividing it by the distance moved, which will cancel out the unit of distance leaving you with the time traveled.

Given time interval and distance moved how do you get average speed?

......!!!!!!!!...................................

RESPONSE -->

By dividing the distance moved by the time interval giving a derived unit of distance/time for the average speed.
