The problem:

A ball accelerates at 8 cm/s^2 for 3 seconds, starting with velocity 12 cm/s.

What will be its velocity after the 3 seconds has elapsed?

answer/question/discussion: avg accel= change in vel/time

Change in vel = avg accel * time

Change in vel = 8cm/s^2 * 3 sec

Change in vel = 24cm/s

Final Velocity = 24cm/sec + 12cm/sec = 36cm/sec

Assuming that acceleration is constant, what will be its average velocity during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: 36cm/s + 12 cm/s = 48cm/sec

Avg velocity = (vf + vo)/2

Avg velocity = 48/2 = 24cm/sec

How far will it travel during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: vAve = change in position / time

Change in position = vAve * time

Change in position = 24cm/sec * 3 = 72 cm
