For each situation state which of the five quantities v0, vf, `ds, `dt and a are given, and give the value of each.

• A ball accelerates uniformly from 10 cm/s to 20 cm/s while traveling 45 cm.

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

You can find ‘dt. It would take 0.33 s to travel the 45cm.

@& You have the reciprocal of the time interval. Careful use of units would have avoided this error.*@

• A ball accelerates uniformly at 10 cm/s^2 for 3 seconds, and at the end of this interval is moving at 50 cm/s.

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

You can find v0. It would be 20cm/s.

#$&*

• A ball travels 30 cm along an incline, starting from rest, while accelerating at 20 cm/s^2.

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

I am unable to determine what quantity can be found. I can see ‘ds is 30 cm and a is 20cm/s^2, but I am unable to connect them with an equation.

#$&*

@& You also know that v0 = 0. The object accelerates from rest.*@

Then for each situation answer the following:

• Is it possible from this information to directly determine vAve?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

No

#$&*

• Is it possible to directly determine `dv?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

No

#$&*

@& 'yes' and 'no' answers always require the support of your reasoning.*@

*#&!

@& You obviously know what you are doing, but see my notes.
