Your 'ball down ramp' report has been received. Scroll down through the document to see any comments I might have inserted, and my final comment at the end.
** Your general comment **
This is my second time doing this assignment. It took me 1.5 hours the last time and my computer was acting up and reset my form as I was getting ready to submit my page. :(
** Will a steeper ramp give greater or lesser time? **
The time required for the ball to roll the length of the ramp will be least for the steepest ramp.
** As slopes increases will time intervals increase, decrease or show no pattern? **
The time intervals will be decreasing because the steeper the slope, the quicker the ball will roll from its initial position to the final position.
** Your report of 5 trials each way for 1 domino **
Trial 1:
48.547, 1.875
7.343, 1.719
6.875, 1.781
8.391, 1.734
6.406, 1.75
Trial 2:
3.719, 1.719
3.781, 1.828
3.563, 1.781
3.5, 1.859
4.656, 1.859
The data was collected using the timer program. A piece of white framing from the bottom of a cork board with a .5 inch groove was used as the ramp. The white marble and dominoes were used from the lab kit. For this experiment one domino was placed under the right side of the ramp and then for trial 2 on the left side. The data represents the time it took the ball to roll from its initial position to its final position. The results between the two trials are fairly parallel.
** Your report of 5 trials each way for 2 dominoes **
Trial 1:
1049.734, 1.313
5.422, 1.281
6.766, 1.375
4.516, 1.313
4.922, 1.391
Trial 2:
1225.063, 1.281
4.594, 1.297
3.734, 1.281
2.828, 1.281
2.891, 1.25
The results were again obtained using the timer program. The only difference this time was that 2 dominoes were used under the right side of the ramp and then the left. The results again are fairly parallel but were a little quicker when the dominoes were under the left side of the ramp. This is probably due to my inaccuracy of trying to hit the timer at the exact time. Overall we see the this time the ball took less time to roll than the previous experiment.
** Your report of 5 trials each way for 3 dominoes **
Trial 1:
1674.391, 1.078
6.922, 1.063
8.234, 1.094
6.641, 1.109
10.797, 1.094
Trial 2:
1.031, 1.057
1.094, 1.046
1.031, 1.046
1.031, 1.106
1.047, 1.057
For this experiment the procedure remained the same except 3 dominoes were used instead of 2. From the data we see that it took even less time for the ball to roll than the previous experiments.
** Do your results support or fail to support your hypothesis about increasing or decreasing times? **
My results support my hypotheses because, as the data shows, the steeper the slope, the less time it takes the ball to roll from its initial position to its final position.
** How do you think ave velocity is related to slope? **
The average velocity is related to the slop of the ramp because gravity is in control. If the ball rolls down a steeper ramp it has no other choice but to accelerate as it rolls down the ramp because gravity is pushing it. On lower slopes the ball isn't required to travel as quickly because there isn't as much of a demand from gravity.
** Speculate on why ave velocity changes with slope. **
As stated, gravity is the major factor is the changing speed of the ball. Velocity is constantly changing and a steeper slope is only aiding in the change in velocity because the ball is forced to accelerate.
** How could you test your speculations? **
I can verify my speculations through my experiments and information from the textbook. If one doesn't look too hard into the experiment it is easy to see that this concept is an elementary idea and a common sense explanation.
