A ball starts with velocity 4 cm/sec and ends with a velocity of 10 cm/sec.

• What is your best guess about the ball's average velocity?

My best guess for the ball’s average velocity is 7cm/s. I reached this conclusion by: 4 + 10= 14/2 = 7 cm/s. I simply took the average of the two numbers.

• Without further information, why is this just a guess?

It is a guess at this point because we don’t know the distance of the slope or the time it took the ball to roll from its initial position to its final position.

• If it takes 3 seconds to get from the first velocity to the second, then what is your best guess about how far it traveled during that time?

My best guess would be 21 cm. I reached this conclusion by taking the 7cm/s that I guessed in the first answer and multiplied that by 3 s to get a result of 21 cm.

(7cm/s) (3s) = 21 cm

• At what average rate did its velocity change during this time?

Average rate = change in position/ time interval. Therefore,

21cm/3s = 7cm/s

This is the average rate of change of position with respect to clock time.

What is the definition of average rate of change of velocity with respect to clock time?

What is the change in velocity?

What is the change in clock time?

What therefore is the requested average rate?

Very good, but you misinterpreted the very last question. There's a very important distinction here.
