A steel ball rolls down a ramp and collides with a marble, as in the video. The marble is slightly smaller and quite a bit less massive than the ball.

• If they both experience forces of the same magnitude (in this case, equal and opposite forces), which will have an acceleration of the greater magnitude?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

if they have the same force we can make some numbers up to show which ball would have a greater acceleration. If the force was 200N and the larger ball was 50kg and the smaller was 25kg, therefore:

Big: F= m*a =200N/50kg a=4m/s^2

Small: a= 200N/25kg= 8m/s^2

Therefore, the small ball would have greater acceleration.

• If the forces were exerted during identical time intervals, which would have the greater change in speed?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

using the same numbers as above, and having the same time of 10s/

A= ‘dv/’dt

Big: ‘dv= 4m/s^2*10s= 40m/s

Small: ‘dv= 8m/s^2*10s= 80m/s

Therefore, the smaller ball would have a greater speed.

You can't determine the speeds of the balls from this analysis. You can find only the change in speed.

It is true that the less massive ball, which experiences a force of the same magnitude as the more massive ball, will have the greater change in speed.
