A steel ball rolls down a ramp and collides with a marble, as in the video. The marble is slightly smaller and quite a bit less massive than the ball.
• If they both experience the same force, which will have the greater acceleration?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :
If both experience the same force, the steel ball will have greater acceleration. The effect of gravity on the steel ball’s larger mass will give it greater weight, and therefore greater acceleration.
Gravity gets the ball rolling but isn't involved in the actual collision.
• If the forces were exerted during identical time intervals, which would have the greater change in velocity?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :
Because the acceleration of the steel ball would be greater, the change in velocity over an equal period of time would be greater than that of the marble.
