Why does it make sense to say that the PE change is equal to the integral of the force vs. position function over an appropriate interval, and what is the appropriate interval?

using a graph of force vs. position you can see that the area under the curve represents PE ( force being the y value, change in y, x being the position, change in x). the interval would be 0 to 20cm
