A ball of mass 400 grams is immersed in water. The ball is suspended in the water by a rubber band chain which exerts a tension force of 2.5 Newtons on the ball.

• What is the weight of the ball?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

the weight of the ball would be the force exerted by gravity

weight = .4 kg * 9.8 m/sec^2 = 3.92 newtons

#$&*

• What is the buoyant force on the ball?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

the net force I zero since 3.92 N acts downward and 2.5 n tension acts upward

the buoyant force must be 3.92N - 2.5 N = 1.42 Newtons

#$&*

• What therefore must be its volume?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

the buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the water it displaces and water has a weight density of 1000kg/m^3. The ball must displace an amount of water which weight 1.42 newtons. So the mass density of the water is 9.8 m/ec^2 * 1000 kg/m^3 = 9800 Newtons/m^3

the weight of the water displaced is then

v*9800N/m^3=1.42 newtons and V = .000145 m^3

#$&*

• What is its density?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

density = mass/volume = 400 grams / 145 cm^3 = 2.8 grams/cm^3
