The problem:

A ball accelerates at 8 cm/s^2 for 3 seconds, starting with velocity 12 cm/s.

• What will be its velocity after the 3 seconds has elapsed?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

It’s velocity will be 36cm/s after the 3 seconds has elapsed. Since it is accelerating at 8cm/sec^2, for every 1 second the velocity will rise 8 cm/s.

#$&*

• Assuming that acceleration is constant, what will be its average velocity during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

It’s average velocity will be 8cm/sec since it its ‘dv is 24cm/sec and its ‘dt is 3 seconds you do 24 / 3 to find the average of 8 cm/sec.

&&&&

The average velocity will be 48 / 2 or 24cm/sec. To find the average velocity you add vF and v0 then divide by 2.

&&&&

12 cm/s is the minimum velocity during the interval, so the average velocity can't be 8 cm/s.

#$&*

• How far will it travel during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

The object will travel 24 cm since it’s average velocity is 8cm/sec and it spans a time of 3 seconds.

&&&&

The object ill travel 72 cm since it’s average velocity is 24cm/sec and it spans a time of 3 seconds.

If that was the average velocity your answer would be correct. However that's not the average velocity.
