This is just a general question about the course. What is expected to be completed the first day of class and how should I structure what parts to do first?

You still have a number of assignments to complete as part of Step 8 of the Orientation, but according to the Due Dates and Assignments page you have all of this week to finish that.
You should also get your lab materials package very soon, if you don't have it already.
