Masses of 5 kg and 6 kg are suspended from opposite sides of a light frictionless pulley and are released.
• What will be the net force on the 2-mass system and what will be the magnitude and direction of its acceleration?
The acceleration is found by first finding a. 6kg-5kg(9.81)=11kg(a)
A=.892m/s^2 moving in a positive direction
Plug this into ft-(5kg)(9.81)=11kg(.892)
Ft=53.31
Net force is simply found by taking 6kg-5kg*9.81m/s/s=9.81N
• If you give the system a push so that at the instant of release the 5 kg object is descending at 1.8 meters / second, what will be the speed and direction of motion of the 5 kg mass 1 second later? Since it is descending you must consider 1.8 negative. So V2=-1.8m/s+.892m/s/s(1s)=-.918m/s it will now switch directions an start ascending.
:
• During the first second, are the velocity and acceleration of the system in the same direction or in opposite directions, and does the system slow down or speed up?
• The velocity and acceleration are in the same direction and it seems that the system is slowing down
