Masses of 5 kg and 6 kg are suspended from opposite sides of a light frictionless pulley and are released.
• What will be the net force on the 2-mass system and what will be the magnitude and direction of its acceleration?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :
Side 1: 9.8m/s^2 (5kg) = 49N
Side 2: 9.8m/s^2 (6kg) = 58.5N
Net Force = 58.5N-49N = 9.8N
9.8N = 11kg(acceleration)
A = 9.8 m/s^2 kg / 11kg = .891m/s^2 toward the ground

• If you give the system a push so that at the instant of release the 5 kg object is descending at 1.8 meters / second, what will be the speed and direction of motion of the 5 kg mass 1 second later?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :
vf = -1.8m/s+9.8m/s^2 (1s)
vf = 8m/s
The 5kg object will be moving at 8m/s up: the opposite direction from what it was going before.
the system doesn't accelerate at 9.8 m/s^2

• During the first second, are the velocity and acceleration of the system in the same direction or in opposite directions, and does the system slow down or speed up?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :
For the first part of the time interval the velocity and the acceleration were in opposite direction, but in the middle, the velocity changed direction and then went in the same direction as the acceleration. The velocity is decreasing / becoming less negative. Then it is 0m/s for a moment and then it begins to increase at 9m/s^2 for the rest of the interval.
