Assignment 2

Play the short (2-minute) video Unpacking Initial Materials Package. This file should play in most media players, including Windows Media Player. Compare the contents of your Initial Materials Package with the items shown in the video.

Submit the open qa for this assignment using the Submit Work Form. The Open QA is designed to help you build on your current knowledge, using common sense and basic reasoning. Each question of the Open QA is designed to either convey information, more frequently, to build on some combination of general knowledge, previous assignments and most often on the questions that precede it.

OVERVIEW ASSIGNMENT: Read everything under Idea 1, Idea 2 and Idea 3 in the synopsis.htm. You won't understand everything you read but digest as much of it as possible, and make brief notes on these ideas. You will revisit this synopsis in about a week to gauge your progress.

See Class Notes #01. Class notes start on CD #2 and are run by running the disk_2 html file in the root folder of the CD.

There are questions in the Class Notes. You should think about these questions, but you are not required to submit answers the questions in Class Notes.

The optional program qa_class_notes contains these questions in a q_a_ format. If you choose to use it, then in order to run this program, you should first run the q a prelim, which will create a necessary folder on your computer and show you how to submit the SEND files created by the program.

You may use this program in any way you choose:

You may ignore it completely.

You may simply 'click through' it, perhaps choosing to think through your answers before seeing the given solutions and taking notes on the given solutions.

You might choose to type in questions and/or answers to some or all questions and/or give solutions and submit the SEND file.

The Class Notes sometimes appear to assign an experiment or an activity. However unless the experiment is assigned on this Assignments page you do not need to do it.

View Physics Video Clips 01-03 on the Gen1 CD (note that the root folder of that CD is pretty cluttered; the file you are looking for is entitled disk_1.htm, which might simply show up as disk_1; when the file appears in your browser click on the Physics Video Clips link). You should think about the questions but are not expected to submit them. You may then choose to run the optional program qa_video_clip_questions, which can be used in a manner similar to the qa_class_notes (see note in red, above).

Randomized Problems: Assignment 2, Problem 1. Randomly choose a version of the problem , solve it and submit it. (There are 40 versions for Problem 1, 9 versions for Problem 2). Submit your solution using the Submit Work Form.

Introductory Problem Sets, Set 2, #'s 1-3. See also Uniformly Accelerated Motion on CD #0.

Complete the lab-related exercise Fitting a Straight Line.

Go to Memorize This and memorize all statements under Idea 1, Rates. These statements, along with the problems you have solved, should help you organize your thinking about the idea of rates and should help you over the next several assignments as you apply these ideas to velocity and acceleration.

`p Principles of Physics Students

Do Chapter 1 Text Problems 1-4 and 12-15. You need not actually submit these problems, or any assigned text problems, though you may if you wish do so (in word-processed form, including the statement of each problem). When you do the Query you should have your work on these problems in front of you; the Query will ask you questions about your solutions.

Do Text Chapter 1 Problems 1-15. You need not actually submit these problems, or any assigned text problems, though you may if you wish do so (in word-processed form, including the statement of each problem). When you do the Query you should have your work on these problems in front of you; the Query will ask you questions about your solutions.

Explore the Giancoli Homepage, which is associated with your text. Specifically, do the following:

(note: Giancoli page is not working properly; assignment will be modified when the page is working)

Not currently assigned: Randomized Problems: Assignment 2, Problem 2. Follow same directions as for Assignment 2, Problem 1.

`uUniversity Physics Students

Text Chapter 1 Even Numbered Exercises 2-20. You need not actually submit these problems, or any assigned text problems though you may if you wish do so (in word-processed form). When you do the Query you should have your work on these problems in front of you; the Query will ask you questions about your solutions.

Submit the open query for this assignment using the Submit Work Form. The Open Query will ask you questions about your work on selected problems. You are required only to submit the Open Query. If you have questions on a problem, a procedure or a concept not covered by the Open Query, you may submit your questions using the Submit Question Form.

** **

For Assignment 2, there are two Open Query exercises listed. The second open query is listed under University Physics Students. Does that mean it is only required for those students or are they both to be completed?

** **

Do I (General Physics I student) need to complete both open query exercise located in Assignment 2 or is the second listed for only University Physics Students?

@& I don't see more that one Open Query listed for the assginement. I could be missing something, or you could be referring to the Open QA as an open Query.

The only assignment specified under University Physics is the text assignment and exercises.

In any case you should submit the 'seed' questions, the Open QA and the Open Query.*@
