cylindrical lens

Your work on cylindrical lens has been received. Scroll down through the document to see any comments I might have inserted, and my final comment at the end.

Your optional message or comment:

Distance from the back of the cylinder at which the band becomes thinnest, and diameter or circumference of the cylinder.

6.72,9

diameter

Distances at which the band focused most clearly and distances at which the focus lessened slightly, in order from closest to furthest; widths of the bands at these distances; distance of source from 'front' of cylinder; description of the bands.

Width of the band; does the width of the band change linearly with position?

3.1

as you move the vertical page away from the cylinder you see that the line become mores clear and straighter.

Past the point of narrowest focus, what happens to the width of the beam? How would you describe the region of space occupied by the beam?

the width of the bright region atarts to expand again and becomes gradually larger till you can no longer see it.

the beam as it leaves the cylinder goes vertical and spreads out

Index of refraction of water according to your measurements; details of your analysis and your analysis of uncertainties:

4.3

first found the angle of before the cylinder and the light and got it to be 4.6 and then the one after the cylinder which was 20 so then got 4.3 by dividing 20/4.6

Index of refraction of second liquid.

3.9+-0.5

sugar water

my first angle was the same it was 4.6 and then second angle was 18 by dividing these you get 3.91

table spoon

Index of refraction of a stack of CDs.

How could you use the information in the first part of the experiment, where you measured the triangle, to determine the index of refraction of the light?

the water bends the light because it goes though a convex glass and through water. the triangle method be less accurate than the method already used because it is hard to tell exactly where the triangle is

Index of refraction using halfway-screened cylinder, comparison between halfway-screened and unscreened cylinder.

a little back from the cylinder the light is sharper then when the light was able to go out the sides it can be father back from the cylinder to make the light sharper. the beam is a lot smaller then when the light was coming from the outside.

straight line

How long did it take you to complete this experiment?
