The problem:

A graph is constructed representing velocity vs. clock time for the interval between clock times t = 5 seconds and t = 13 seconds. The graph consists of a straight line from the point (5 sec, 16 cm/s) to the point (13 sec, 40 cm/s).

• What is the clock time at the midpoint of this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

13+5= 18/2= 9 sec

• What is the velocity at the midpoint of this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

16+40/2= 28cm

Velocity= 28cm/ 9sec= 3.1cm/sec

• How far do you think the object travels during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : = d= 3.1cm/sec*8sec= 24.8cm/sec^2

cm/s * s = cm, not cm/s^2

• By how much does the clock time change during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : 13-5= 8sec

• By how much does velocity change during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

Initial: 16cm/5sec= 3.2 cm/sec

Final: 40cm/13sec= 3.1cm/sec

3.2-3.1= 0.1cm/sec

there is no quantity here equal to 16 cm, or to 40 cm. There are velocities of 16 cm/s and 40 cm/s, but you wouldn't divide a velocity by a clock time to get a velocity.

• What is the average rate of change of velocity with respect to clock time on this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : 40-16/13-5= 3cm/sec

• What is the rise of the graph between these points?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : 40-16= 24cm

• What is the run of the graph between these points?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : 13-5= 8sec

• What is the slope of the graph between these points?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : 24/8= 3cm/sec

• What does the slope of the graph tell you about the motion of the object during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : The object is climbing 3 cm per second.

• What is the average rate of change of the object's velocity with respect to clock time during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> : 24cm/3cm/s = 8cm/s
