The problem:

A ball starts with velocity 4 cm/sec and ends with a velocity of 10 cm/sec.

• What is your best guess about the ball's average velocity?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):

The balls average velocity would be 2.5 cm/sec

#$&*

• Without further information, why is this just a guess?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):

Because I just took the final velocity and divided it by the initial velocity to get what I thought would be the average velocity without an equation to do so.

Does it make sense for the average velocity to be less than the initial or the final velocity?

#$&*

• If it takes 3 seconds to get from the first velocity to the second, then what is your best guess about how far it traveled during that time?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):

The ball would have traveled 30 cm during that time.

• At what average rate did its velocity change with respect to clock time during this interval?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):

The average rate = change in A/change in B

average rate = change in velocity/ change in clock time

(10cm/sec – 4 cm/sec)/(3 sec – 0 sec) = 2 cm/sec

The average rate that its velocity changed with respect to clock time was 2 cm/sec

20 minutes
