course phy 201 On a slope of .05 does a steel ball roll down the track with out slipping and what is the max slope this will occur. Ramp length is 61 cm so slope = dh/61. I started with a dh of 3.05 cm and increased it by a cm over the first few intervals and then by more to get the ball to slip. I tested the ball on the ramp from a slope of .05 all the way to a slope of .4 which is about the maximum slope for the ball i was using. It began to slip very small amounts when the slope was approaching .4. The ball I was using was a large steel ball with a mass of around 20g. I think the reason this ball slipped at a steep slope was due to a small amount of rust built up on the surface of the ball. The rust along with the weight of the ball created a larger coefficent of friction that allowed this ball to stick to the track better.
