goal to provide you with a set of sequenced questions and exercises which illuminate/reveal/provide the meaning of the course

Ideally by making your best attempt on each problem, by identifying and carefully noting discrepancies between your solutions and the given solutions, and by using the self-critique process you will be able to correctly answer the majority of the questions posed and in the process gain a good understanding of each topic. If you make the attempt and fall short, I will do my best to clarify the situation, often through additional questions and alternative explanations.

However don't expect to make a half-hearted attempt, fail to engage the problem, etc., then ask 'can you explain this differently'?

Most students come to these couress with at least some deficiencies in preparation and background, and will require additional time to complete the course. ...

effort required for I

it might take awhile to get to the level of the course

questions and self-critiques can always be inserted by ...

checklist which comments would be appropriate to your work ... do this a few times and you'll have the right idea

create a checklist specific to each of the orientation qa's

1/3 of students can do this ... another 1/3 can get there with a moderate amount of additional work and attention to details ... 1/3 of students don't have the prerequisites and got into the course when they shouldn't have; some can make it but it's gonna take a lot of additional work, maybe an unbelievable amount

make this into an optional qa?

instr needs information in order to respond quickly; responses limited to electronic responses; in-person responses take too long and give inordinate access to local students with the 'right' schedule, taking time away from themselves and all others
