Lab_24_question

course Phy 241

In the lab of Assignment 24, I am having trouble with the following question: In the box below give in the first line the velocity of the first ball immediately before collision, the velocity of the first ball immediately after collision and the velocity of the second ball immediately after collision, basing your calculations on the time of fall and the mean observed horizontal ranges.

In the second line give the before-collision velocities of the first ball based on (mean + standard deviation) and (mean - standard deviation) of its uninterrupted ranges.

In the third line do the same for the first ball after collision, and in the fourth line for the second ball after collision.I thought that you should be able to get the after collision velocities from the data program in which you enter the height of the fall, number of dominoes, and the horizontal distance.

I was a little unsure about getting this value for the second smaller ball, because it did not go down the ramp. It is stationary, so that means that before the collision its velocity is zero.

This is correct.

I am not sure how to caculate the before velocity of the first larger ball especially since it passed down the straight ramp also.

You observed it when it passed down the ramp and off the edge without hitting the second ball, so presumably you have calculated its velocity at the instant it left the ramp. It will have that same velocity just before it hits the second ball.

In the section following this question the lab reads

That line should read 'The masses of both balls are unknown'. I've made the modification, and the line should be as indicated.
