accel = (27m/s - 8m/s) / 13s
accel = about 1.46m/s/s
vAve = accel * t
accel * `dt gives you `dv, the change in velocity. It does not give you vAve.
vAve = 1.46/m/s/s * 13s = 18.98m/s
distance = vAve * time
distance = 18.98m/s* 13s = 246.74m
***Sketch a velocity vs. clock time graph for an object whose initial velocity is 8 m/s and whose velocity 13 seconds later is 27 m/s. Explain what the slope of the graph means and why, and also what the area means and why.***
The slope of the graph represents the acceleration which is 1.46m/s/s. The area represents the average velocity.""

If the slope represents the acceleration, and time is on the x-axis, then you are multiplying acceleration and time, which gives the change in velocity. Therefore the area represents the change in velocity.
The slope of a graph represents rise / run. If you multiply slope by run, which would be equilivalent to mulitplying acceleration by change in clock time, you the rise of the graph, not the area.

You are correct about the slope.
To figure out the meaning of area you have to figure out what the average altitude of the trapezoid means, and what the width means, then what it means to multiply the two.
