15:36:20 `q001. Part 1 includes six activities. If you have completed an activity, just enter the answer 'completed'. This question is appearing in the Question box. The box to the right is the Answer box, where you will type in your answers to the questions posed here. To use this program you read a question, then enter your answer in the Answer box and click on Enter Answer. In your answers give what is requested, but don't go into excruciating detail. Try to give just enough that the instructor can tell that you understand an item. After entering an answer click on Next Question/Answer above the Question box. Do you understand these instructions?

17:28:56 `q001. Explain the difference between x - 2 / x + 4 and (x - 2) / (x + 4). The evaluate each expression for x = 2.
......!!!!!!!!...................................
RESPONSE --> The equation without the paranthesis allows the numberator and denominator to be divided out before any addition or subtraction is done. The paranthesis makes the addition and subtraction be done first before any division is done. For x-2/x-4 with x=2: 2 - 2 / 2 + 4 = -2 / 4 = -1 / 2 (2 - 2) / (2 + 4) = 0 / 6 = 0 confidence assessment: 1

17:34:13 `q002. Explain the difference between 2 ^ x + 4 and 2 ^ (x + 4). Then evaluate each expression for x = 2. Note that a ^ b means to raise a to the b power. This process is called exponentiation, and the ^ symbol is used on most calculators, and in most computer algebra systems, to represent exponentiation.
......!!!!!!!!...................................
RESPONSE --> I remembered with the order of operations to do what is in the parentheses first, but realize now that I misread the first expression. I didn't do the division correct on that and it changed the whole thing. On the second expression I got the same answer but a different way. I ended with 0 / 6 because I kept the second half of the expression as ( 2 + 4). confidence assessment:

17:36:26 2 ^ x + 4 indicates that you are to raise 2 to the x power before adding the 4. 2 ^ (x + 4) indicates that you are to first evaluate x + 4, then raise 2 to this power. If x = 2, then 2 ^ x + 4 = 2 ^ 2 + 4 = 2 * 2 + 4 = 4 + 4 = 8. and 2 ^ (x + 4) = 2 ^ (2 + 4) = 2 ^ 6 = 2*2*2*2*2*2 = 64.

RESPONSE --> I must not have read the last question right, I thought I was still explaining the difference between an expression in which part is inclosed in parentheses. I do know that something to the power of x, raises the number that much. And anytime there are parentheses in this, you have to do what's in the parenthese before raising to the power of. self critique assessment: 2

17:47:43 `q003. What is the numerator of the fraction in the expression x - 3 / [ (2x-5)^2 * 3x + 1 ] - 2 + 7x? What is the denominator? What do you get when you evaluate the expression for x = 2?
......!!!!!!!!...................................
RESPONSE --> When x = 2: 2 - 3 / [ (2(2) - 5)^2 * 3(2) + 1] - 2 + 7(2) -1 / [ ( 4 - 5 )^ 2 * 6 + 1] - 2 + 14 -1 / [( -1) ^ 2 * 7 ] - 16 -1 / [ 1 * 7 ] - 16 -1 / 7 - 16 = -1 / -9 The numerator is -1 and the denominator is - 9 when x = 2. Because of the order of operations, the part of the equation within the parentheses must be processed first. confidence assessment: 2

17:52:21 `q004. Explain, step by step, how you evaluate the expression (x - 5) ^ 2x-1 + 3 / x-2 for x = 4.
......!!!!!!!!...................................
RESPONSE --> I didn't read the expression right, I'm still thinking of the numerator and the denominator to be separate the entire time. I didn't make the 2 - 3 / 7 - 2 + 14 just one line, I considered it to be 2 - 3 over 7 - 2 + 14, not 3/7 in the middle. confidence assessment: 1
