The problem:
A ball starts with velocity 4 cm/sec and ends with a velocity of 10 cm/sec.
• What is your best guess about the ball's average velocity?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):
I would guess that the average velocity was about 6cm/sec. (10cm-4cm/sec= 6cm/sec).
#$&*
@& If the ball started at 2 cm/s and ended up at 60 cm/s, you wouldn't conclude that the average velocity was 58 cm/s. What you have calculated is the change in velocity, which is not directly related to the average velocity.*@
• Without further information, why is this just a guess?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):
This is just a guess because I would really need the starting distance, ending distance, starting time and ending time to get a true measurement of rate.
#$&*
@& Good. That information would suffice to calculate the average velocity.*@
• If it takes 3 seconds to get from the first velocity to the second, then what is your best guess about how far it traveled during that time?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):
I would guess that it traveled 18 cm during that time. (6cm/sec *3sec= 18cm).
#$&*
@& If the ave vel was 6 cm/s this would be correct.*@
@& 6 cm is not a given quantity. There is no cm position, nor is there a 6 cm displacement, which corresponds to the interval being considered.
*@
• At what average rate did its velocity change with respect to clock time during this interval?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):
The velocity changed at an average rate of 2cm/sec. (6cm / 3 sec= 2cm/sec.).
