If we are talking about how far it travels from our point of 16 cm to 40 cm then I would say that the object travels 24 cm.
16 cm and 40 cm are not quantities involved in this problem; 16 cm/s and 40 cm/s are, but their difference is 24 cm/s, not 24 cm

I am not sure if I understood this question completely and I thought some of the questions repeated. Was this a misunderstanding on my part???
I think you did misidentify some of the information. However some of the questions were redundant, in that they asked for essentially the same quantity to be calculated from different points of view.
