Exercise 1.3 Question 1.
A Riddle, Cat Woman has a number of cats. When you ask she states she has 5/6 plus 7. The book answer is 42. I don't understand this conclusion. I have worked it out to no avail.

I interpret here answer as indicating that the number of her cats is 5/6 of itself, plus 7. So you have to find a number such that 5/6 of itself is an integer, and that when 7 is added to that integer you get the number.
It would be reasonable to consider numbers which are multiples of 6. The first several multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72, etc..
Just to pick a number from this list, let's see if 24 could be the answer. 5/6 of 24 is 20, but that doesn't work since 20 + 7 = 27, not 24. It should be clear that 24 isn't big enough.
Let's try 60. 5/6 of 60 is 50. When we add 7 we get 57. So 60 is too big.
Proceeding in this way, or in some other way, we will eventually try 42. You can verify that adding to 5/6 of 42, we get 42.
