Suppose a i + b j + c k is orthogonal to both. Then the dot product of this vector with each of the given vectors is zero, and we have

a + 2 b - 2 c = 0

a + b - 2 c = 0

Subtracting the second equation from the first we get b = 0.

I did make a number of arithmetic errors in the document, and should correct most of them. I do intentionally leave a few arithmetic errors in some solutions problems, which alerts me to students who are feeding me back my own solutions without working them through. However that's done only on a handful of document in a course, and this early document isn't the place to be doing it*@
