rubber band calibration

Your 'rubber band calibration' report has been received. Scroll down through the document to see any comments I might have inserted, and my final comment at the end.

Your initial comment (if any):

first line ruler markings, distance in actual cm between ends, how obtained:

10, 27.5

8.75

I measured the band from the 10 cm mark on my reduced ruler and it ended at 27.5 cm. I measured the band marked 1 and I think my measurement is accurate to about +- .1 cm

The basis for your uncertainty estimate:

This estimate comes from unavoidable errors when determining where the band begins and ends.

Positions of the ends of each rubber band, actual lengths of each when the chain supports 1 domino:

10, 27.9

10, 26.9

10, 27

10, 27.5

10, 27.8

10, 27.5

End

8.45, 8.45, 8.5, 8.75, 8.9, 8.75

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

I think the uncertainty is about +- .1 cm

Distances between ends when supporting 2 dominoes

9, 8.95, 8.9, 8.9, 9, 8.9

These results were from the weight of two dominoes.

Lengths when supporting 4, 6, ... dominoes:

9.35, 9.15, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 9.3

This result is for four dominoes

9.75, 9.65, 9.6, 8, 9.85, 9.4

this result is for six dominoes.

10, 9.75, 9.88, 9.8, 10.15, 9.7

this result is for eight dominoes.

Your table of force in Newtons vs. length in cm for all rubber bands

8.75, 8.45, 8.5, 8.75, 8.9, 8.75, .19

9, 8.95, 8.9, 8.9, 9, 8.9, .38

9.35, 9.15, 9.2, 9.3, 9.3, 9.4, 9.3, .76

9.75, 9.65, 9.6, 8, 9.85, 9.4, 1.14

10, 9.75, 9.88, 9.8, 10.15, 9.7, 1.52

end

column 1 contained each measurement in cm for one band while the second column measured the force in newtons

Describe the graph of your first rubber band

Increasing at an increasing rate throughout

The tension force in your first rubber band at length 9.8 cm:

1.7

The length of your first rubber band when tension is 1.4 N:

9.9

The forces at your observed lengths the 1st rubber band, as given by the curve, and the deviations of those curve-predicted lengths from the observed lengths:

.2, .45, .7, 1.3, 1.6

.01, .07, .06, .16, .08

The lengths predicted for forces .19 N, .38 N, .76 N, 1.14 N, etc. by the curve for your first rubber band; the deviations of your actual observations from these predictions:

8.6, 8.7, 9.2, 9.6, 10.2

.15, .3, .15, .15, .15, .2

The typical error you estimate when predicting force for a given length from your graphs:

+-.18 N I got this estimate by taking the average of how much the lengths differed corresponding to each of the forces.

The typical error you estimate when predicting length for a given force from your graphs:

+-.06 cm I got this estimate by taking the average of the difference between the curve estimate and the actual measurements.

Everything in this lab report looks very good. Keep up the good work.
